I (well, my brother, actually) scanned in the pages from the collaborative comic that everyone had a chance to contribute to at my table at Staple. Behold the seven glorious (?) pages of rather random narrative that we ended up with at the end of the weekend (including some panels by Kevin Eastman!)….
I made this page for the STAPLE! 2012 program book. I colorized the version shown here, to add to that old-timey feel; but the original is black-and-white.
Each artist exhibiting at the convention has the opportunity to create a page for the booklet (although apparently they might not be able to fit all of them in the book this year—I guess I won’t know until the convention arrives whether mine made the cut). Pages can contain comics, random illustrations, etc. I wasn’t sure at first what to do for my page; but I have quite a number of these old-style ad parodies written up and just waiting to be drawn, so I ended up choosing a few of them to make into a mock advertisement page.
All of that hand-lettering is more difficult than it looks (or at least, it was difficult for me); it took several evenings of hand-straining toil to finish. I tend to grip the stylus much too firmly when lettering or working on really tiny details like that, so my hand ended up being really sore by the time I was done. (Maybe I need some Gristle Salve!)
Note that the number of layers shown in the info block above is just a guess—there were so many that I lost track while I was counting them, and I didn’t want to have to start all over again. The vast number is due mostly to how I used layers for almost every little bit of lettering; also, I duplicated several groups while rearranging and making little tweaks, leading to a ridiculous proliferation of layers (most of which weren’t even visible in the final product). I get serious use out of those Photoshop layers.
This is the same person seen in the previous illustration in this series of theoretically-part-of-a-story-but-really-kind-of-random-so-far illustrations.
The pencil draft of this was the sketch of the day on February 13th. For some reason, this thing took me way too long to ink/color.
Yeah…. I totally haven’t been updating the site…. But, uh, anyway, come see me (and buy some stuff) at STAPLE! in a few weeks! :) (Read the full article for vastly more details.)
